Job Description

Position Overview:


Reporting directly to the CEO, this position will be based at corporate headquarters in the greater Austin area and will be responsible for the company’s financial/operations, strategy planning and execution.


The CFO will oversee the company’s financial planning & analysis, tax, insurance, accounting, operations and human resources. Additionally, the CFO will execute on company vision by partnering with other executive team members in developing actionable plans and initiatives, scaling business operations, reviewing merger and acquisition opportunities, and driving execution of the company’s strategic plan.


The successful candidate will combine effective hands-on day-to-day financial management with innate curiosity, insightful strategic thinking, refined analytical competencies and superior management skills working with the CEO, Investors, directors, consultants, and others.

Additionally, the CFO will oversee the operations and financial strategy for the companies where the President/CEO of EPE is a majority holder, particularly Utility Plexus Engineering, LLC which hosts the software consulting business. Together EPE and UPE are part of a unique vision of the CEO to serve the future of Electric Modern Grid.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):


Duties include serving as CFO to Electric Power Engineers, Inc. and appropriate subsidiaries:


Accounting Process & Controls - Establish, implement, monitor, enhance and enforce internal controls, best accounting practices, policies and procedures that guide fact-based financial decision-making and proper financial reporting; consolidate, monitor and confirm the financial condition of the company. This includes reporting on and optimizing the financial operation of the company, its subsidiaries, and foreign operations in tandem with the CEO’s personal and business financial goals.


Organizational Leadership - Manage, staff, and develop the Company’s Accounting, Human Resource (HR) functions; evaluate overall organizational performance; execute staff succession and growth plans through effective coaching, counseling and mentoring and top-grade organization where and when required. Lead organizational risk management including insurance and legal. Implement accounting, financial and operational best practices. Represent the company with investment bankers and investors. Manage, plan and optimize use of, land, buildings, new offices, products and changes in the workforce.


Financial Reporting & Management - Lead the accurate and timely delivery of financial statements and budgets & forecasts, develop KPI’s including monthly and quarterly management reporting as well as annual financial statements and footnotes; provide information to and coordinate with external auditors, lending institutions, investors, key advisors as well as the CEO. Proactively identify and address / mitigate the root causes of variances. Oversee employee benefit plans, with emphasis on maximizing cost-effective benefits package, and monitor budget compliance of operating departments. Enhance and oversee sales and marketing efforts including analysis of pricing for new and existing products and ensure the integrity of sales data.

Cash Management and Budgets - Oversee cash-related activities with focus on driving the most efficient use of working capital and debt throughout the business; ensure cash flow and assets are sufficient for the organization’s needs and to assure compliance with contractual obligations; monitor and approve all cash-related transactions and prepare accurate Financial Statements and Statement of Cash Flows, modeling, and forecasting reports. Proactively manage departmental budgeting and cash flow risk.

Financial Modelling- Review company initiatives for short- and long-term financial impact on the business. Dedicate attention to all moving parts in the business and continuously update business financial models to identify opportunities for improvement. Direct attention to the findings and propose adjustments to initiatives and operational execution as required, including directing and monitoring execution.

Business Plan Modeling: Build business plans and roadmaps for the company’s 3, 5- and 10-year strategic plans, and/or for startups or major new initiatives that the company may undertake. This includes active involvement in business strategy and being responsible for producing roadmaps for strategy execution. Must work closely with executive team and senior leadership to identify all financial and operations impacts of the business plans and initiatives, and report feasibility to the CEO.

Business Plan Modeling: Build business plans and roadmaps for the company’s 3, 5- and 10-year strategic plans, and/or for startups or major new initiatives that the company may undertake. This includes active involvement in business strategy and being responsible for producing roadmaps for strategy execution. Must work closely with executive team and senior leadership to identify all financial and operations impacts of the business plans and initiatives, and report feasibility to the CEO.

Tax Planning and Financial Filing- Responsible for the organization’s financial sustainability, including the preparation and communication of weekly, monthly and annual financial statements. Responsible for compliance with all requirements with federal, state, and local tax and regulatory filings and reporting. Responsible for financial reporting to third parties required by contractual obligations. Oversee the financial operations of subsidiary companies and foreign operations. Manage any third parties to which accounting, or finance functions have been outsourced. Supervise Mergers and Acquisition due diligence and negotiate the same. Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts. Oversee the financial operations of subsidiary companies and foreign operations. Arrange and manage investment funds or debt financing.


Requirements and Qualifications:


The CFO will earn a leadership role at the Company by understanding the business and working closely with the executive team and the CEO. The CFO will have previous success leading a sizable complex growth-oriented organization and will assist others in managing challenges and capitalizing on opportunities along the way. The CFO will have superb interpersonal skills and interface well with all levels in the organization with the capacity to educate a wide range of internal players on how to harness finance in pursuit of profit objectives. The CFO will be inclusive, listen well, and effectively synthesize multiple opinions in developing business solutions. Exceptional handling of confidential information and exercises utmost care in protecting the same. The CFO will also be comfortable expressing a contradictory, minority opinion when appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • BA / BS in math, finance, accounting, business administration or other quantitative discipline is highly preferred.
  • Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) or equivalent.
  • Designation as Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant

  • 15 years of overall experience
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible experience for a major company, a division of a large corporation, or a successfully growing organization with revenues exceeding $30M.
  • 5+ years of increasingly responsible managerial experience
  • Proven success in a company that has achieved aggressive growth from small to mid-size.
  • Experience analyzing and creating sales compensation plans
  • Experience in Business Planning
  • Experience in presenting the company to investors and in being part of M&A.
  • Experience must also demonstrate partnering with an executive team and a high level of written and oral communication skills
  • Must demonstrate a highly developed command of complex financial and general accounting principles, practices, and procedures
  • Strong work ethic, highly motivated and well-organized
  • Superior skills in spreadsheet and other computer applications used in financial reporting and analysis, with emphasis in Excel, as well as in databases
  • Experience in QuickBooks and other financial computer applications
  • Ability to learn new software programs very quickly, and capable to implement systems to standardize combining information from different sources to produce powerful financial reports and scenario analysis

Additional Technical Qualifications:


Finance Organization Leadership - CFO level experience managing the complete range of finance and human resources functions inside a dynamic small business including GAAP, human resources, business planning, accounting and reporting.

Strong Technical Finance Skills - Grounded in accounting, processes, and control and successful experience working closely with audit firms and their partners on both tax and audit issues; respected by auditors as a technically capable finance executive balanced with strong management skills.


Strong Strategic Plan Execution Skills – Must have skills and capabilities to execute on CEO and Executive Team vision, and produce financial models supported by detailed roadmaps. Be capable to guide as well as improve on the execution of company strategic initiatives.


Demonstrated Communication Skills - Effectively and succinctly synthesize data and information to provide insight and financial perspective to both internal and external stakeholders. Able to express minority opinion where necessary.


Efficient Capital Allocation - Hands-on finance executive who will build a lean effective finance function that will wisely allocate capital; an executive who enjoys the daily challenge of a fast-paced environment where priorities may shift quickly and is expected to do a lot with minimal resources across a range of duties.


Strong Business Operations Skills – Must have strong skills in understanding and discovering all business operations details for producing financial models that evaluate initiatives and company operations expansion or evolution plans. Capable of identifying opportunities in company operations and people to improve on company bottom line profit margins and demonstrating the same through financial models.
