This Certified Nursing Assistant – PRN position will be located within the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s (UNTHSC) – Correctional Medicine Department (CMD). This position will report to CMD’s Clinical Operations Manager.

This contract position will responsible for providing Certified Nursing Assistant Health Care Services for UNTHSC’s Comprehensive Medical Services contracts with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). These services will be provided on-site and within the secure perimeter of a Federal Bureau of Prisons correctional facility in the Fort Worth area.



Position Summary

This contract position will provide certified nursing health care services and will be scheduled on a PRN basis by UNTHSC’s Correctional Medicine Department to support the coverage needs of the designated Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) shall provide nursing services to inmates in the designated Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facility consistent with their certification. CNA shall be required to adhere to Joint Commission, BOP Program Review, and American Correctional Association standards.

Scope of Services and Clinical Duties CNAs must adhere to the following duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Assist with direct patient care procedures, treatment, and other related clinical tasks consistent with CNA certification.
  • Perform routine clinical procedures based on defined BOP protocols.
  • Assists in obtaining patient histories, takes vital signs, prepares charts and assists with medical examinations.
  • Assist with scheduling appointments.
  • Assist with dispensing medications and medical supplies consistent with certification.
  • Practice safety, environmental and infection control methods.
  • Provide all other duties as assigned within the scope of their CNA certification to support the clinical operations and health care missions of the assigned BOP facility.

Upon completion of each shift, the CNA shall ensure all required medical records and reports for inmate patients assigned during their shift has been completed consistent with Joint Commission and/or Bureau policies, procedures and regulations. CNA shall also ensure effective coordination and transfer of care responsibilities of assigned inmate patients to other clinical staff and/or appropriate BOP staff for continuity of care purposes.


Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:

  • Current Nursing Assistant Certification in the State of Texas

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

1) Completion of a National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) and current Nursing Assistant certification.
2) Experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
3) Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation certified, in accordance with the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
4) Must be able to type, file, do basic math and work on a computer, along with the ability to read, understand, fluently speak, and legibly write English.
5) Must have a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology and understand medical terminology.
