Job Description

The successful candidate for this position will be a 1099 contractor with Music Ministry International and be responsible for the following:

1. Contract Position Title. Catholic Director of Music/Musician, Regimental Memorial Chapel, Fort Eustis, VA.

2. Scope of Responsibilities. The Musician shall provide instrumental organ/piano/keyboard music to assist the congregation in worship for the Catholic Mass at Regimental Memorial Chapel, Fort Eustis, VA. The Musician shall be responsible for the care, control and general oversight of all the music for the Catholic Mass.

3. Units of Work. Musician provides services during Sunday Masses, Holy Days of Obligation, and Key Liturgical events. If necessary, practice sessions and rehearsals will be held prior to each service at a time to be determined by the Musician and in coordination with the Senior Catholic Chaplain (SCC). Special services and practices/rehearsals for those services are in addition to the normal weekly work units.

4. General Responsibilities.

4.1. Musician shall perform for all regularly scheduled Sunday Masses, Mass rehearsals and additional services as requested by the SCC, including, but not limited to, special chapel functions and other special services.

4.2. Musician shall follow Fort Eustis operating instructions for use and care of buildings and equipment.

4.3. The Musician shall coordinate all support requirements with the SCC or his/her designated representative.

4.4. The musician will personally perform the services described above or coordinate performance by a substitute of equal or higher proficiency who has been approved in advance (minimum 14 days) by SCC or his/her designated representative. Absences shall not be scheduled during Holy Days such as Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas unless approved by the SCC or representative.

5. Specific Responsibilities.

5.1. Support and assist the SCC for weekly Sunday Masses.

5.2. Play the piano/organ/keyboard for the designated Mass including: accompany singing of hymns, choruses, and spiritual songs; perform prelude, postlude, offertory, and liturgical music for meditation and prayers that enhance the atmosphere of worship for the Mass. Generally, prelude is 10 minutes before designated start time and postlude of at least 5 minutes at the conclusion of the Mass. Play the piano/organ as accompaniment for choir rehearsals.

5.3. Special Services: Musician will provide music as necessary for special services in coordination with the SCC and the Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE) Senior Army Chaplain. Special Services may include, but are not limited to, special religious services and Memorial Ceremonies or Services. When possible, Musician will receive four weeks’ notice for special services. However, requests for memorials will generally be short notice.

5.4. Accompany Choir Rehearsal: Musician will provide piano/organ/keyboard accompaniment for choir rehearsals. To qualify as a rehearsal, the event will have a minimum duration of 60 minutes.

5.5. The Musician shall be responsible for the training of the choir/instrumental group.

5.6. Musician shall work closely and in harmony with other musicians and pastoral team, demonstrating a sensitivity and openness to participate in prayers and spiritual conversation while demonstrating a flexibility to adjust worship venues and music in accordance with the spiritual tone and atmosphere of the worship service.

5.7. The Musician shall consult with the Catholic Chaplain on all matters relating to music and liturgy.

5.8. Musician shall follow all Fort Eustis Operating Instructions for proper administration and care of buildings and equipment. Notify the SCC or Chapel NCOIC regarding any maintenance problems or requests concerning the instrument(s) of the chapel facility.

5.9. Musician shall ensure that all facilities and equipment are properly secured after use.

5.10 Musician shall maintain model decorum with special attention to dress and conduct that is appropriate for religious services and programs.

6. Education, Experience, and Other Significant Requirements.

6.1. Musician will provide a resume that includes the following.

6.1.1. A minimum of 4 years-experience regularly playing piano/keyboard and organ in Sunday Roman Catholic Mass Liturgies.

6.1.2. At least 1 year experience playing pipe organ for Roman Catholic Mass.

6.1.3. Three letters of recommendation which include contact information for verification of required experience. Letters of recommendation must come from Parish Pastor and coincide with the experience listed above.

6.2. Musician will demonstrate proficiency in an audition/interview to be scheduled upon completion of the solicitation process. The audition will include the following.

6.2.1. Two musical selections chosen by the prospective musician. The selections will represent a prelude/anthem and offertory music. These selections will be played on the chapel’s pipe organ.

6.2.2. Musical selections chosen by the interview panel. The prospective musician may play selections on either pipe organ or piano; however, ability on both are desired.

6.3. Musician should have a basic understanding of military protocol and possess the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.

6.4. Current Safe Environment training (i.e. VIRTUS, STAND, etc.) as called for in the USCCB’s Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, article 13 and military instructions and regulations.

6.5. A favorable background check as determined by the local installation policy.
