Position Summary
Per Governor Inslee's Proclamation 21-14.1, employees of higher education must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless a medical or religious exemption is approved. Campus Safety Officer
The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for providing public safety and security for the College community by protecting college property, buildings, grounds, equipment and other assets, located on campus grounds, owned or leased property. The Campus Safety Officer receives and processes reports, obtains statements and conducts initial inspections of incidents, accidents, and complaints. Campus Safety Officers must be able to positively interact with a diverse campus community and have a service focus. Campus Safety Officers are required to respond to emergency and crisis situations within the capabilities and limits of the Department’s authority. Campus Safety Officers are designated as “Essential Personnel” and are required to report to work during emergencies.

Essential Functions
General Patrol Duties

  • Patrol on foot or in patrol vehicle to enforce institution laws and policies.
  • Inspect buildings and grounds for prowlers, damage, vandalism, or other crimes.
  • Inspect doors and gates to ensure campus security.
  • Direct and regulate traffic and parking.
  • Investigate accidents and crimes, administer first aid; issue citations for violations; gather evidence; locate witnesses; appear in court as required.
  • Operate communications equipment, answer telephone inquiries, take reports of incidents, inspect and operate alarms, access control, and video surveillance systems.
  • Assist law enforcement as needed.
  • Report crimes to law enforcement and secures crime scenes.
  • Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  • Follow Pierce College District policies and procedures, Department policy and State law.
  • Receive and process lost and found property.
  • Control access to facilities; identify property damage, equipment malfunctions, utility failures, or any other unusual, dangerous or suspicious situation.
  • Respond to emergencies, accidents, altercations, alarms or disturbances; assist with evacuations and crowd control.
  • Assist the campus community by providing services such as vehicle unlocks, escorts, battery jumps, and building unlocks.
  • Issue parking permits, access cards and keys as directed.

Lead Duties

  • Leading, training, coaching, mentoring, and checking the work of hourly officers and interns.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Required Education

  • GED or High School Diploma.

Required Experience

  • Two years' experience in public safety, law enforcement, or security OR equivalent combination of experience and education.

Special Requirements

  • A valid Washington driver’s license (at time of hire).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR, AED, first aid certifications within 120 days of employment.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check.
  • Ability to successfully complete a driver’s record check.
  • Ability to perform the physical and mental demands of the position.

Terms of Employment
Pierce College is recruiting to fill two vacancies, one at the Fort Steilacoom campus and the other at the Puyallup campus. Both vacancies are full time (40 hours per week) over - time eligible positions with Pierce College District. Infrequent travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur.

Work hours are between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, Monday through Friday with occasional weekend work.

A shift premium of $174.00 per month will be provided to classified employees for shifts that are predominantly after 5:00 PM.

Salary and Benefits
The starting salary range of this position is $3,616.00 to $4,188.00 a month (dependent upon qualifications), with annual periodic increments up to $4,855.00. However, your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. A comprehensive health care benefits package for you and your dependents includes medical, dental and vision insurance. Physical Work Environment
This position works indoors in an office environment and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
