National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL)

The National MagLab is operated for the National Science Foundation by a collaboration of institutions comprising Florida State University, the University of Florida, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The NHMFL operates the world’s most powerful electro-magnets at Florida State University, the University of Florida and Los Alamos National Lab including a 45 T dc magnet and a 35.2 T (1.5 GHz) NMR magnet.

Present projects include development of a 40 T all-superconducting magnet. Our long-term plan includes development of 30 T NMR magnets, neutron scattering magnets, and resistive-superconducting hybrid magnets up to 60 T.

Responsibilities

Responsible for preparing and monitoring highly specialized and complex budget reports for the MagLab. Document and process accounting entries for budget and project levels including the budget allocation. Analyze, process, and approve all types of budget requests. Reconcile assigned budgets on a monthly basis to the FSU accounting system (OMNI) by tracing FSU ledger information and supporting documents. Assist in the preparation of Sponsored Research Award documents on assigned budgets for funding requests. Ensure compliance with GAAP and other governmental or funding agent's laws and regulations by analyzing, verifying, and performing complex financial reconciliations. Prepare financial documents to evaluate previous budgets, expenditures, variances, and spend down rates. Provide support by monitoring, researching, coordinating and responding to budget and audit requirements. Formulate budget allocations for the MagLab departments and the numerous projects within each department. Supervise and perform supervisory related tasks for the OPS accounting clerk staff. Train staff on budgeting practices related to OMNI and OBI reporting. Participate in professional development on accounting, university procedures, and/or relating to financial applications.

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and one year of experience related to the duties of the job; or a high school diploma/equivalent and five years of experience in the same. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)
  • Experience preparing and monitoring budget information.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with the concepts, principles, and practices of accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
  • Experience prioritizing and organizing work assignments, and compiling, reviewing, and reconciling data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Computer skills to include experience with Microsoft Word and Excel or comparable software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Soft Money Funded Position

This is a partially soft money funded position, with renewal based on available funds and the needs of the University.
