Job Description

Ten Speed Press is an imprint of Random House, a division of Penguin Random House, LLC, the world's largest general trade book publisher. We are seeking an Assistant Production Editor to join our team in the Ten Speed office in California. This position will play an essential role in bringing practical nonfiction and illustrated titles to market quickly, while working closely with internal editorial, production, and design colleagues.


Primary responsibilities include:

  • Hiring and supervising proofreaders, and indexers.
  • Preparing manuscripts for layout, including proper structuring, formatting, and coding.
  • Reviewing first pages, including evaluating and incorporating corrections from proofreaders and authors; may include additional copyediting or fact-checking, and following up with queries.
  • Reviewing and collating all subsequent passes as well as material created at later stages, such as indexes.
  • Managing a diverse set of publishing responsibilities and adapting to different work styles and fluid reprioritization.
  • Collaborating on and maintaining and meeting book schedules.
  • Running reports, processing invoices, and sending freelancer packages.
  • Attending administrative and workflow meetings.

  • Minimum of 2 – 3 years of related experience; publishing experience is a plus but not required
  • Genuine interest in book publishing and production editorial
  • Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Highly organized, with the ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, electronic copy editing, and tracking changes
  • Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Familiarity with FileMaker Pro a plus
  • An understanding of reprint corrections a plus but not required
  • Professional or personal experience with some of the subject matter
