Early R&I is one of the three main therapeutic research areas within AstraZeneca that delivers candidate drugs into late-stage clinical development. To further strengthen our expertise and capacity we are now recruiting experienced Team Leaders within the Bioscience In Vivo Gaithersburg section to lead and develop in vivo science teams with focus on identifying and validating new drug targets for patients with rheumatological/gastrointestinal diseases and respiratory diseases such asthma and COPD.


The teams will deliver key in vivo data to projects across all phases of the drug discovery and early development and work with different modalities such as antibodies, small molecules, modified mRNA, antisense oligonucleotides, and peptides. The role will be based at our vibrant R&D site in Gaithersburg (US) within AstraZeneca’s state-of-the-art laboratories.

What you’ll do

In this role, you will be a scientific and people leader within Early Respiratory and Immunology Department focusing on developing therapeutics for the treatment of rheumatological/gastrointestinal diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis and also respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD . You will ensure delivery of preclinical and translational data in support of key portfolio programs , drive identification of novel targets partnering with multiple functional teams and drive technical excellence in bioscience research.


Essential for the role:

  • Extensive experience of running and overseeing in vivo models of rheumatological & gastrointestinal diseases and/or respiratory diseases with the ability to integrate both disease and pathway approaches in support of a broad portfolio of research programs.
  • The ability to work closely with key leaders in partner functions to ensure that project goals and timelines are adhered to and considerable experience in the identification and progression of drug targets through to the clinical setting
  • Demonstrable experience of maintaining the highest standards of welfare and ethical compliance as well as ensuring the integrity of all generated scientific data.
  • The capacity to drive innovation and scientific excellence through internal scientific development, external collaborations, publications, and competitive awareness. Able to create and maintain a work environment in which scientific challenge and innovation are maximized
  • The ability to ensure that AstraZeneca remains highly scientifically visible by publishing high impact scientific papers and presenting data at appropriate conferences.
  • Experienced in leading performance and setting challenging, achievable and measurable objectives and managing team expectations.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with emphasis on people management and development of others
  • Hold a MD and or PhD degree in immunology or respiratory pharmacology or other relevant research area. This will be complemented by a number of years expertise in the drug discovery environment.

Additionally, you will possess:
  • A strong understanding of Immune-mediated rheumatological/gastrointestinal and/or respiratory diseases.
  • Approximately five years’ experience in the identification and progression of drug targets through to the clinical setting.
  • Outstanding team working skills and a proven track record of working collaboratively to ensure scientific perfection and rapid progression of projects
