Job Description

The College of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences invites applications and nominations for the tenure-track position of Director of Bands, Assistant/Associate Professor (11-month) in the Department of Music. The department enjoys endowments and private scholarship funds in excess of $1.5 million, annual university performance scholarships in excess of $800,000, a visiting artist series, and NASM accreditation. Many performances are presented in the state-of-the-art, 1200-seat, Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall and ground was just broken on the brand-new Wingate Center for the Fine and Performing Arts which will open for the fall semester of 2022.

The department serves 220+ majors and minors, and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees: BA, BM (Composition, Performance, Piano Pedagogy), BME, MM (Performance, Music Education, Conducting, Theory). The faculty is composed of 35 full-time and 15 adjunct members, most of whom have national and international reputations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities & Qualifications: The University of Central Arkansas seeks a Director of Bands with demonstrated commitment to supporting a thriving and diverse music program. The Director of Bands will oversee the entire band program where the primary responsibility will be the performance and artistic vision of the Wind Ensemble as well as maintaining a regional, national, and international presence. Other duties include giving overall leadership to the Symphonic Band, University Band and athletic bands which includes the Bear Marching band and the Purple Rage Pep Band, Chamber Music, Summer Band Camps, and instrumental recruiting at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Director of Bands will manage a staff that includes an Associate Director of Bands and several graduate students. Additionally, the position entails teaching the undergraduate Instrumental Conducting course and instructing all graduate offerings for the MM in Instrumental Conducting program, including literature courses and instrumental conducting classes and recitals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Qualifications include the DMA in Instrumental Conducting, Ed.D., or equivalent, and significant band conducting experience in K-12 music education as well as professional and semi-professional conducting work. The department is seeking a candidate with experience in working with a diverse student population.

The formal education of a Doctorate or Terminal Degree required.
