Responsibilities:

The School of Public Service at DePaul University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with expertise in Public Policy and Public Sector Management to begin Fall Quarter 2022. Knowing that diversity enriches the academic experience and advances innovation, we are committed to attracting candidates from historically underrepresented groups.

Screening of applications begins November 7, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.

We seek a strong teacher who is committed to DePaul’s social justice mission and has an active research agenda. The successful candidate would be a broadly trained scholar of public management, administration, or policy who can contribute directly to the School’s core graduate curriculum (https://las.depaul.edu/academics/school-of-public-service/graduate/Pages/default.aspx). Expertise and interest in one or more public management specialties is desirable (e.g. local government, nonprofit management, policy-making and implementation, public accountability and collaborative governance), although candidates from other subfields of public management and policy will be considered. A secondary specialization in an area that complements the School’s existing curriculum in housing, immigration, inequality, and other intersecting domestic concerns is preferred, as it the ability to teach statistics and/or research methods. We are looking for someone who will contribute significantly to the delivery and leadership of the School’s mission and curriculum.

DePaul University’s School of Public Service has been preparing graduate students for careers in public service for over fifty years. Located in the heart of Chicago’s downtown Loop, the School delivers five masters degree programs with a focus on public policy, public administration, and nonprofit management and an undergraduate curriculum in public policy and nonprofit organizations. Degree programs in the School are accredited by NASPAA and we welcome candidates that have experience with or interest in supporting NASPAA accreditation practices. For more information see: https://las.depaul.edu/academics/school-of-public-service/Pages/default.aspx. The position also encourages building cross-disciplinary relationships within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences with programs such as Applied Diplomacy, Public Health, Sustainable Urban Development, Refugee and Forced Migration Studies, the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development and other degree programs, particularly those in the Urban Collaborative.

DePaul is a teaching intensive university with a commitment to social justice. Tenure track faculty typically teach a 6-course load over 3 quarters. The School of Public Service focuses primarily on graduate teaching, but the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to teach undergraduate students.

Required Qualifications:

At the time of appointment, the preferred candidate should: 1) possess a Ph.D. in public policy, public affairs, or public administration; 2) have a record of peer-reviewed publication appropriate to career stage; and 3) demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with students, practitioners, and the public.

Candidates will be evaluated according to a) overall quality of their academic preparation and scholarly work, b) relevance of their scholarly research to the School’s academic priorities and fields of inquiry, c) evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, and d) strength of recommendations from their referees. Candidates will also be evaluated according to evidence of attention to cultural diversity in teaching, research, and/or service and the proven ability to contribute to the University’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Screening of applications will begin on November 7, 2021, and continue until the position is filled. We require: 1) cover letter; 2) curriculum vitae; 3) contact information for three references; 4) statement of teaching philosophy and pedagogy; and 5) up to three representative publications/examples of research.
