Job Description The Television, Radio & Film department seeks a tenure-track faculty member to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in audio basics, audio storytelling, sound for picture, music underscoring and supervision, and music recording. The position requires substantive knowledge of the aesthetics and perceptual effects of sound; expertise in digital audio technologies and various consoles, control surfaces and DAWs, including Avid Pro Tools, Adobe Audition and Apple Logic Pro. This position has a start date of August 22, 2022. The Newhouse School is looking to develop a vision of audio that connects across departments to multiple media platforms, applications and emerging technologies, including but not limited to XR, spatial and immersive audio. Interdisciplinary aptitude and significant professional experience are required. The successful candidate must have experience in all aspects of audio workflow, from planning and production to post, as well as a clearly defined creative or research agenda related to audio and media. Advanced degree preferred. Previous teaching experience is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will need to show potential for conducting academic scholarship or industry-related creative activity/research that will position the hire as a recognized expert in the field. Participation in service and committee work for the department, the Newhouse School, and Syracuse University is expected.
Qualifications A master’s degree is preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Engage in a research/creative agenda that brings national visibility to the School.
  • Contribute to service-related initiatives, including academic and career advising of students, school and university committee service, curriculum development and assessment, and community/professional outreach.

Teaching responsibilities will range from introductory, intermediate, and advanced audio courses for musicians, engineers, producers, sound designers and more, for film and television, and other areas of interest.

About the Television, Radio & Film ( TRF ) Department Established in 1934, the TRF program is regarded as one of the best of its kind in the nation. The department’s 18 full-time faculty members, complemented by a specialized adjunct force, prepare future leaders in the television-radio-film and interactive media industries by introducing students to practices and systems of production, distribution and exhibition and their economic, political and social impact on the world.

The TRF major is the largest and most versatile in the Newhouse School, with 500 undergraduates and 40 master’s students. The major consists of a mix of core requirements and an extensive array of elective coursework, empowering students to customize their programs of study. Majors also study abroad—in over 100 programs in 60 countries—and participate in semester-long industry immersions in our New York City and Los Angeles professional study centers. Students in the program earn national recognition, with their creative work accepted to film festivals and the student Emmys and Telly awards.

Alumni pursue a wide variety of careers that include work as major market (mainly New York and Los Angeles) producers, directors, writers, designers, editors, executives, media educators, agents and attorneys.
