Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY

Directs community relations strategies on behalf of the Department of Public Safety, by interacting with community leaders, key community groups, external agencies, educators, representatives of Public Safety Bureaus, other City officials and residents within all city neighborhoods. Assists in defining challenges and critical concerns among public safety leaders and key community group leaders, and works toward positive resolution and relationship building.

Qualifying Requirements:

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show seven (7) years of full-time experience in a public safety-related field, with four (4) of those years in community service and/or public relations. (Full-time is defined as 32 hours or more per week. Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
EDUCATION/TRAINING
: The application must clearly show a Master's Degree from a fully accredited institution in Public Relations, Public Policy, Communications or a related field.(See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training.)
EQUIVALENCY
: Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is thirteen (13) years. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training.)

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. POSITION DUTIES

  • Convenes and leads various committees and/or boards made up of community leaders, city officials, educators and/or non-profits who will help guide the community relations objectives of the organization.
  • Develops and promotes educational events and seminars.
  • Develops strong ties to prominent community leaders with similar missions.
  • Oversees the generation, publishing and distribution of newsletters and other publications that highlight the community and public impacts of the Department of Public Safety's mission, outreach efforts and operations.
  • Supervises and develops staff as assigned.
  • Attends a broad range of public/community meetings and acts as a representative of the Department of Public Safety in such forums.
  • Designs and helps to implement new programs and vehicles through which the Department of Public Safety community outreach team can deliver new services to the community and ways to promote the benefits of existing programs.
  • Keeps abreast of current local and national trends and prepares written and oral reports interpreting data and detailing trends, and proposes strategies for response or improvement.
  • May work evenings, weekends or holidays.
  • May serve as Department's liaison with other City Departments, outside agencies, etc. on assigned projects.
  • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
