Introduction

The Assembly Sergeant at Arms Office is currently accepting applications for LTE (Limited Term Employment) Messengers to join the Wisconsin State Legislature.

The Assembly Sergeant at Arms is elected every two years by the Assembly and is responsible for hiring and supervising a staff of messengers. The Assembly Sergeant at Arms is a non-partisan office that aids the operation of the Assembly.

Messengers are expected to have good communication skills and a positive work attitude. They should be comfortable working independently and in groups. Employees are required to perform their duties in a confidential and professional manner. Prior experience in a job that requires excellent customer service skills is desired. A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of training and experience are required. Professional attire is necessary.

Duties include: errand deliveries, copying, scanning, carrying heavy and/or bulky items, staff support for legislative committees and floor session, labeling brochures/documents, counting and bundling newsletters and bulk mailings, providing security services, setting up and taking down equipment, arranging rooms and moving furniture, and answering the telephone.

We are located in the State Capitol building in beautiful downtown Madison, Wisconsin. Our office is walking distance away from the Monona Terrace, the Dane County Farmer’s Market, and historic State Street.

Position Summary

For the most part, hiring of the Assembly Sergeant's staff takes place prior to a new floor period, usually August and November. Throughout the two year session, however, there may be vacancies so we accept applications at any time. Legislative sponsorship is sometimes helpful in obtaining a position on the Assembly Sergeant's staff. A strong recommendation can enhance your chances of being selected for a position.

Schedule availability is an important part of our hiring process, since we hire based on the needs of the Assembly, which meets Tuesday-Thursday. We ask that applicants make themselves available to work 12-20 hours a week. We try to adhere to shifts of 3 hours or more. In addition, occasional evening hours are needed when the Assembly is in Session. The Legislative Sessional employment ends in May of even-numbered years.

Salary Information

Starting pay is $12.00 - $13.00 per hour.

Job Details

We request that messengers work an average of 3-5 shifts per week/12-20 hours. We try to adhere to a four hour shift, although an exception may be made for applicants available around the noon hour. Typical shifts are from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, and 12:00 p.m. to 4/5:00 p.m. Occasional evening hours are required. The Sergeant's office is somewhat flexible and will work with you in determining your schedule. The starting pay is currently $12 - $13 per hour.

This is a customer service position and should be a learning experience in state government. We are interested in hiring responsible, stable and intelligent individuals so that we might best serve the needs of the Assembly members and their staffs.
