About the position of Art Director:

Whittle School & Studios is seeking an Art Director to join our Headquarters (HQ) team. The Director is responsible for overseeing and producing high quality graphics and artwork for the Whittle organization through the use of digital and graphic arts techniques. The Director must possess advanced knowledge in the areas of computer graphics, typesetting, typography and design, and specialized graphic arts applications including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.

We are looking for someone who can create stories through design that build the brand through all mediums. We need a passionate creative thinker, with strong attention to detail who will be the guardian of the visual elements of the Whittle brand. In this position you will lead concept development and execute visual designs for printed materials, including collateral, merchandise, and direct marketing deliverables. Additionally, you will work on website look and feel, Keynote/PowerPoint presentations, and video production, as needed. Under the direction of the VP of Global Brand Marketing, you will be intimately involved in multiple projects at the same time. You will work alongside key stakeholders including marketing directors/managers, division directors, and heads of schools, among others.

The position will report to the VP of Global Brand Marketing. This position can be remote as long as you are within driving distance of the Washington, DC Campus, so that you can be on-campus, as needed, for meetings, presentations, or video/photography shoots.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Develop and execute visual brand strategy from production to delivery of creative assets, including printed materials, collateral, video production, and presentations.
  • Explore and initiate new and exciting ways to communicate Whittle's brand sensibilities. Be on the forefront of design that pushes boundaries and makes Whittle the premiere destination for Pre-K-12 education.
  • Design brand assets including templates, logos, and style guides.
  • Provide graphic and design services to faculty, staff, and administration
  • Lead brainstorming sessions with key stakeholders
  • Prepare artwork and text for print by packaging fonts, links, and final files
  • Proof completed work
  • Retouch and color correct photos electronically
  • Accept delegated responsibilities as assigned
  • Project a positive and professional demeanor in the workplace and campus community

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of 8 years design experience
  • Knowledge in major design applications (Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Familiarity with evolving technologies, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, mobile web/apps, responsive design, iOS, etc. would be useful
  • Significant experience with print production
  • Fantastic sense of typography, layout, hierarchy and color.
  • Strong understanding of communications, dissemination, and publication.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects and working independently
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Highly innovative and collaborative
  • Entrepreneurial with an enthusiasm for doing whatever it takes to get the job done (we are a start-up and wear multiple hats!)
