Job Description
    DutiesSummary

    This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), House Office Buildings, Mechanical Systems Day, Evening or Night Section. The selectee works on Air Conditioning Equipment and performs tasks involving installing, repairing and modifying air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems that regulate climatic conditions. May be hired at the Mechanic level (WG-10) or Worker level (WG-8).


    Responsibilities

    TOURS OF DUTY: Day Shift (6:00 am to 2:30 pm)

    Evening Shift (4:00 pm to 12:30 am)

    Night Shift (Midnight to 8:30 am)

    ***The positions are designated as "Emergency/Essential" and will be required to report to work during emergencies and inclement weather conditions.***

    MAJOR DUTIES (quoted at WG-10 level):

    • Runs and maintains air conditioning equipment throughout offices and other facilities requiring critical control of temperatures.
    • Makes all required mechanical connections in order to secure ventilation and exhaust fans for steadiness and cavitation-free functioning.
    • Fuses chilled water or refrigerant lines to condensers, evaporators, compressors, and controls. Evacuates, dehydrates and charges system with appropriate refrigerants. Checks for refrigerant leakages. Resets controls essential to maintain desired temperatures, pressure, and humidity.
    • Locates and diagnoses problems in control systems following trouble calls or inspections.
      Fabricates new and/or repairs parts such as hinges, flanges, pipe joints, and bearing sleeves, which can require welding. Makes all necessary adjustments in electrical and pneumatic controls for optimal operation of chilled or hot water valves, booster heaters, pre-heaters, maximum air return from outside, and automatic and bypass volume dampers.
    • Routinely maintains associated electronic equipment using manufacturer's equipment guides and specifications, industry criteria, and established techniques for guidance.
    • Checks systems for suitable running cycles, refrigerant and oil leakages, motor and compressor temperatures, belt adjustment and replacement, set points, cleanliness, operations and superheat rotation, and heating protection. Notes any faulty or damaged parts or unsuitable settings and adjustments and makes necessary modifications. Reports any equipment needing major repairs to the supervisor.

    The position may be filled at the Worker level (WG-8) or Journey-level (WG-10). If hired at the Worker level (WG-8), the selectee will perform progressively more difficult tasks to develop skills leading to promotion to the Mechanic level (WG-10).
