Job Description

ACTIVITIES MONITOR

Reports to: Senior Centers Coordinator

Department: Lotus Center

Classification: Non-Exempt

Position Characteristics:

Under the direction of the Senior Center Coordinator, the Activities Monitor is responsible for the implementation of the day to day recreational activities and programs which meet the social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs of the elderly and disabled clients at the EBRCOA Senior or Nutrition Centers. The Activities Coordinator will have an active role in the planning process, working with team members, as needed and alongside other employees, vendors and contractors to ensure proper implementation of plans and strategies. This position requires the ability to effectively and efficiently organize, communicate and collaborate with other as well as with others.

Duties and Responsibilities:

To reflect in all aspects of job performance the mission of the East Baton Rouge Council on the Aging, Inc. “serving the elderly in East Baton Rouge Parish, to enrich and enhance their quality of life through advocacy efforts, creative planning, and coordination and provision of needed services, and to make it possible for them to live independent lives as long as possible.”

  • Plans and leads activities according to monthly calendar and under the direction of the Senior Center Coordinator.
  • Prepares materials necessary for projects, activities and snacks.
  • Assists in the monthly planning of the activity calendar by providing suggestions and brainstorming with the Senior Center Coordinator to plan and conduct new activities. Provides suggested visitors, vendors or subcontractors to the Senior Center Coordinator.
  • Communicates with the Senior Center Coordinator, the Senior Center Assistant Director and Senior Center Director to ensure each program and activity is being implemented to its fullest potential.
  • Sets up for activities and cleans up afterwards, as directed.
  • Practices good safety and protects clients from any possible harm.
  • Assists in rendering first aid as needed.
  • Assists in performing other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Accompanies seniors on senior trips and activities (Events beyond normal hours will be compensated through compensatory leave).
  • Maintains senior center sign-in sheets on a daily basis.
  • Reports changes in client’s conditions or behaviors to the Senior Center Coordinator.
  • Participates in client recruitment campaigns and community outreach.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Center Director participates in fundraising efforts for Senior Center activities and special events.
  • Promotes a positive relationship with all seniors that participate in senior center events.
  • Demonstrates professionalism while working. Maintain client confidentiality. Respect client’s rights and maintain a positive attitude on the job.
  • Maintains client confidentiality with East Baton Rouge Council on Aging’s confidentiality policy and all applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Any other duties deemed necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and orientation to the philosophy of the EBRCOA as presented in Mission/Philosophy statements.
  • Excellent Communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with co-workers, clients and visitors; cultural sensitivity and ability to relate well and effectively in diverse workplace and with a diverse client population.
  • Comfortably and respectfully serve the special needs of an elder client population.
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of the activities and the enthusiasm and performance of the clients.
  • Physically able to perform duties such as standing for long periods, squatting, bending and lifting heavy objects.
  • Ability to operate and trouble-shoot general office equipment (e.g., copier, fax, calculator, etc.)

Other Requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent with 3 - 6 months of experience in working with senior citizens or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $9.00 - $11.00 per hour
