Job Description
Overview: The NUMC (Nassau University Medical Center) Academic Coordinator for the BS/MS PA Program has the responsibility of coordinating, overseeing, and teaching the first year/didactic curriculum with the support of the clinical faculty members and the academic administrative assistant. Responsibilities: Evaluating, editing, and updating the learning objectives and syllabi for all the courses to meet graduate standards
  • Coordinating the timely distribution of course syllabi and objectives
  • Advising faculty on the proper format and language of learning objectives
  • Soliciting comments on the contents of the learning objectives from staff/faculty/medical director/preceptors/alumni/other PA Program personnel
  • Editing final drafts of learning objectives
  • Maintaining files on objectives and syllabi, and general information about the curriculum
Evaluating faculty and curriculum
  • Coordinating the peer evaluation effort
  • Coordinating student evaluation of courses
  • Tabulating results of the student evaluations, sharing the results with Program Director and faculty, and discussing the results with the faculty to correct any areas of weakness
  • Evaluating instructors and making sure they follow all learning objectives according to graduate standards

Evaluating outcome
  • Reviewing available standardized test results with staff and curriculum committee to analyze areas of strength and weakness in the curriculum
  • Sharing the analysis of available standardized exams with individual faculty members
  • Analyzing together with the clinical coordinator(s) student's performance on each clinical rotation, identifying curricular areas of weakness, and discussing avenues of curriculum enhancement
  • Implementation of curricular improvements via the curriculum committee
Scheduling of classes
  • Scheduling 900 contact hours with a faculty composed of more than 30 members, mostly adjuncts.
Coordination of faculty
  • Orienting the faculty to the Program and general curriculum
  • Instructions and discussions of instructional methods
  • Presentation of students perceptions/impressions and needs
  • Analysis of the correlation of exams with learning objectives
  • Review of exams prior to their administration and analysis of subsequent student performance
  • Development and maintenance of a close faculty-program relationship
  • Recruitment and interviewing of new faculty
Supervising, counseling and evaluating academic progress of 1st year students
  • Maintaining ongoing records of each student's academic progress
  • Coordinating the advisor groups of the 1st year students
  • Assigning the staff as academic advisors to the students
  • Review and enhancement of guidelines for advisement
  • Apprising advisors of any academic trouble a student may be experiencing
  • Serving as advisor for a fourth of the total PA class and utilizing a problem oriented test review when indicated
  • Overseeing submission of junior student grade rosters to registrar
  • Reviewing ultimate accuracy of official transcripts
Periodically meeting with class representatives and with the entire class
  • Oversight of the development and maintenance of a close student-staff relationship
  • Serving as a liaison between students and faculty
Assignment of course master for all multi-component courses
  • Facilitating meetings with faculty members to work out logistics of all graduate coursework
  • Review and editing of the general overview of the course, course description, methods of evaluation
  • Coordinating exams, calculating final grades
Teaching courses in area of expertise Supervisory responsibilities
  • Assignment and supervision of the workload for the academic administrative assistant
Responsibilities for general aspects of the PA Program and the School of Health Sciences
  • Participating in the admissions process including application review, interview and serving on the admissions committee
  • Serving as a member of the PA Academic Progress Committee
  • Participating in the preparation of the bulletin and catalogue
  • Participating in the writing of accreditation documents
  • Serving on school-wide committee
  • Participating in the recruitment effort
Qualifications: Education/ Licensures
  • NCCPA Board Certified
  • Valid license to practice as a Physician Assistant
  • A Master’s degree is required
  • A Bachelor of Science from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
