Job Description

Bethel School District is seeking qualified applicants for a 5 hours per day Nutrition Services Baker for the Nutrition Services program.

Nature of Work

A Baker is responsible for independently preparing a significant part of the School District's nutrition service menu, such as preparing yeast baking items at a separate facility, to be baked or cooked by others. Positions of this class may work irregular or early morning hours.


Examples of Work

These duties are illustrative only. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Bakes hamburger buns and other baked goods, including proofing, mixing, and other tasks involved with baking and production.
  • Prepares, proofs, mixes, and refrigerates dinner rolls for baking at other schools and cinnamon rolls for breakfast programs at other schools; packages pre-baked goods for delivery to schools.
  • Fills dispensers and sets out milk, soft drinks, trays, napkins, straws, condiments, silverware and plates and other items; sets up steam table and serving area.
  • Washes pots, pans and other food preparation equipment and attachments; and sweeps and wet-mops the kitchen floor.

Selection Factors

  • Knowledge of yeast baking techniques and methods, as required by the position.
  • Knowledge of the equipment and procedures involved in institutional cooking.
  • Knowledge of the safety and sanitary requirements of a food preparation and service operation, and the necessary precautionary measures.
  • Ability to organize time and materials in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to safely operate commercial food preparation and nutrition service equipment found in school kitchens of Bethel School District.
  • Ability to work from written menus and recipes and to adapt standard recipes in preparing dishes for a large number of people while adhering to nutrition and sanitation guidelines.
  • Ability to learn and apply state and federal government requirements regarding serving quantities and nutritional components of the subsidized meals program.
  • Ability to accurately judge food quantities.
  • Ability to learn and apply safe lifting techniques in lifting and carrying cases of food.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, co-workers, families and supervisors.
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate and legal level of confidentiality regarding students, staff, and other individuals.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable and prompt attendance.


Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or the equivalent. Six months of experience at a level equivalent to a nutrition service assistant. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which ensures the ability to perform the work may be substituted for the experience.


Special Requirements

Possession or ability to obtain an Oregon Food Handlers Card within five days after starting work.
