POSITION SUMMARY
The CNC Laser Operator is responsible for producing quality products safely and efficiently by setting up, operating, and performing simple programming of a CNC Laser. The CNC Laser Operator produces parts and tools from metals or other materials using a co2 Laser and Fiber Laser, a computer numeric controlled (CNC) piece of equipment that makes precision cuts into materials based on the inputs entered by the CNC Laser Operator. The CNC Laser Operator reports to the Fabrication Lead.

JOB FUNCTIONS
Include the following, but other duties may be assigned.

  • Operate and understand laser computer software (Meta Cam and SigmaNest)
  • Operate and understand Laser offloading software (SigmaNest Color Offload).
  • Locate and move material with hoist, pallet jack or forklift.
  • Provide the knowledge and ability to problem solve cutting condition issues and their effect on the parts being produced.
  • Execute proper startup and shut down of the laser machines and automated material storage tower.
  • Troubleshoot and be able to make modified changes to parts when needed.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, use hand/power tools when needed, and perform visual inspections of all parts cut.
  • Identify the difference between various metals (carbon, stainless, aluminum, galvanized steel, etc.) and gauge thicknesses.
  • Accurately complete all required paperwork and system transactions in a timely manner.
  • Report any problems with machines to supervisor.
  • Check availability of all production orders prior to releasing to the production floor.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
  • Properly use and maintain equipment and materials for which the role has responsibility.
  • Maintain quality standards and schedules.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, Engineering, and QC inspectors.
  • Order materials based on job order requirements.
  • Produce sheet metal parts by setting up and operating the CNC co2 Laser and Fiber Laser.
  • Machine set up including program retrieval, proper gases, proper nozzles, lens cleaning and adjustments, etc.
  • Edit the G code (computer software) if necessary or as needed.
  • Check accuracy of work using blueprint and precision measuring tools.
  • Inspect, clean, calibrate and perform preventive maintenance on machines.
  • Continuously monitor machine cutting performance and efficiency adjusting as needed.
  • Read material tags and work orders, selecting correct materials.
  • Count and record daily production activity.
  • Separate cut parts from scrap.
  • Experience on short and long production runs with multiple setups per shift.
  • Support the Fabrication shop or other production team on an as needed basis.
  • Follow all safety rules and maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must have a High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience in a manufacturing environment operating a CNC and/or Fiber Laser.
  • Experience with operating a forklift truck and overhead crane.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Proficient in using precision measuring tools.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Be comfortable working in fast paced environment.
  • Proficient in Shop Floor Manager (SFM) labor reporting.
  • Proven ability to use general measuring devices such as tape measures, scales, angle finders, and metal thickness gauges.

VALUED BUT NOT REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience in steel fabrication.
  • Trade school training a plus.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Experience with tools such as grinders and scalers.

REPORTING TO THIS POSITION

  • No direct reports.

Normal working schedule: Monday thru Thursday, 6:00am EST to 4:30pm EST; occasional overtime and weekend hours required at times.

The noise levels in some manufacturing facilities frequently may exceed the normal dBA. The employee is required to wear all necessary personal protective equipment (safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, masks, etc.) while working or when walking through the plant. In addition, the employee may be required to wear a respirator and/or dust mast depending on the nature of work performed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
