Basic Purpose

Assist in the development and execution of the accounting policy function and ensure alignment with Navy Federal’s overall goals, strategies, mission and vision. Work directly with the Manager of Accounting Policy, leadership in Finance, and stakeholders across the enterprise to:
(a) Produce the appropriate accounting assessments and recommendations associated with business initiatives related to products, services, and transactions
(b) Monitor and communicate emerging or changing accounting and regulatory standards
(c) Assist in representing Navy Federal externally on accounting related matters
(d) Develop and maintain an accounting policy handbook for broad consumption
Direct report to the Manager of Accounting Policy

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate summaries of proposals, standards, regulations, and developments affecting Navy Federal in the areas of accounting and disclosure
  • Aid in the clear and concise communication of complex accounting and reporting issues to nonaccountants
  • Gain a working understanding of Navy Federal’s systems and data
  • Identify issues requiring consultations and advice provided to the business and operational accounting teams
  • Lead the processes to effectively document complex accounting and reporting issues and work with external auditors and regulators to support accounting positions, as needed
  • Form relationships with product line personnel to stay informed of new or changing products, services, and transactions to provide decision useful advisory services to leaders in a timely manner
  • Assist in compiling periodic training to finance and accounting teams on emerging accounting and regulatory standards
  • Maintain strong organizational skills to drive productivity throughout the team
  • Compile existing accounting policy documentation to formulate an organized, user¿friendly accounting policy handbook for broad consumption
  • Understand the financial reporting data lineage framework to effectively provide advisory services to the business and operational accounting teams
  • Render assistance in representing the organization externally on matters affiliated with accounting and disclosure issues identified within the financial services industry
  • Contribute to a culture of horizontal collaboration by actively working across business units and sharing knowledge
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Active CPA license
  • 3+ years experience in accounting/finance leadership experience, preferably with a Big 4 public accounting firm and/or in a publicly traded banking or financial services environment
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial industry regulations (i.e., NCUA, OCC, FDIC)
  • Extensive experience accounting for loans, securities, derivatives, and other complex financial instruments
  • Experience in identifying accounting issues and performing relevant accounting guidance research
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to communicate complex accounting concepts to non-accountants
  • Ability to build relationships with executive management, internal, and external stakeholders
  • Advanced experience in managing cross¿functional, multi¿dimensional teams and projects of the highest complexity which have business risk and impact
  • Advanced experience in identifying relevant analytical problems, determining appropriate diagnostic methods and solving unique and complex issues/problems
  • Effective mentoring skills

Desired Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Accounting, Finance , or Business Administration
  • Experience in writing accounting white papers/memos
  • Experience in creating accounting policies
  • Experience with NCUA regulations
  • Database technological skills – Access, SQL, Hadoop

Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm

Location: Remote (Travel may be required up to 10%)

Salary range: ($83,100) to ($142,000)
