Lead Phlebotomist - ? Westmont, Outpatient Laboratory
POSITION DETAILS:
  • Full-Time, 40 hours per week

  • Monday-Friday; Must be willing to work variable shifts in between the hours of 7:00am-7:00pm.

  • Every Other Saturday Required- 7:00am-1:00pm.

PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for assisting the Laboratory Director, Manager and Supervisor with procedures in phlebotomy, specimen collection and processing, general laboratory, CLIA Waived/Moderate POC testing, assists with Bone Marrow collection and/or any other duties under the direction of a certified Laboratory Supervisor. The Lead Phlebotomist assists with the training, scheduling, and auditing of phlebotomy staff for competency and policy compliance. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for the training, compliance and competency for the collection of patient samples for adult and pediatric patients by vascular access (venipuncture) or capillary collection (finger stick) using aseptic protocols, accurate patient identification and proper labeling procedures
    • Responsible for routine visits of collection sites to ensure quality, compliance, and efficiency
    • Assists with collection during peak volume times as well as determined by operational needs
    • Initiates investigation for issues and concerns that arise and reports to the appropriate leadership as well as being involved in any education required
    • Accountable for the first line of communication for Phlebotomy staff in day to day operations that includes but is not limited to scheduling, Quality Assurance monitoring, and clinical staff support
    • Perform specimen centrifugation, processing, prepping for transportation, storage and retrieval. Produce patient demographic sheet and prepare additional paperwork, labels, etc. to accompany specimens, as necessary
    • Able to demonstrate and explain appropriate phlebotomy techniques and procedures in order to obtain corporation and assistance for specimen collection
    • Employs sound decision making and necessary judgment to assess adverse reactions such as dizziness or other distress and notifies the appropriate clinical staff
    • Preserves patient confidentiality and ensures HIPAA compliance with all patient related duties
    • Maintains a clean patient/ working environment while meeting the requirements with all OSHA and regulatory agencies with appropriate use and disposal of sharps, medical/biological waste
  • Performs CLIA waived and some CLIA moderate testing as well as Bone Marrow collection assistance
    • Responsible for the performance of quality control, calibration, and maintenance of the instrumentation that they are trained on
    • Ensures the accurate recording of test results to ensure quality reporting within the expected time frame
    • Communicates any questions, unusual findings or observations to the Lab Manager or Supervisor
    • Works directly with the physicians for the observation and assistance in the bone marrow specimen collection and preparation of samples for testing
  • Responsible for ensuring patients receive a quality professional phlebotomy service and a pleasant patient experience at all locations in addition to phone interactions
    • Assists in the developments, assembly, and implementation of the annual phlebotomy skills and competency assessment for all of DuPage Medical Group
    • Participates in the educational and training activities and may participate in the performance of routine administrative and non-routine technical functions within their scope
    • Responsible for interacting with patients professionally and courteously utilizing positive patient experience tools
    • Monitors phone and voice mail messages, as necessary
    • Utilize skills to accurately access patient/testing information and communicate effectively with patients and clinical staff
    • Appropriately maintains inventory of supplies and materials within the department
  • RL6 investigation and support
    • Effectively reports and investigates patient safety incidents, medical errors and potential risks in the facility
    • Assists with identification and implementation of corrective action where appropriate
    • Responsible for investigating issues such as turn-around-times with the lab, problems receiving supplies, patient issues and concerns, and will be responsible for forwarding these issues to the correct leadership
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREDLicense / Registration / Certification
  • One of the following certifications:
    • American Medical Technologist (AMT)
    • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
    • National Health Association (NHA)
    • National Phlebotomy Association (NPA)
    • NCA - National Credentialing Agency
  • CPR required
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalency
  • Phlebotomy Certification required (within three months of hire date, before preferred)
Experience
  • 3 years of phlebotomy experience required
  • Point of Care (CLIA Waived testing) preferred
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA)
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA, CLIA, HIPAA, and regulatory requirements.
  • Basic knowledge in laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office applications. Conditions common to a clinic environment including communicable disease, blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids and toxic substances. It is a medical environment involving contact and interaction with patients, clinicians and other clinical/clerical personnel.

  • Local travel required 25-50% of the time based on the operational needs within the Laboratory Services Department of DuPage Medical Group with limited notice.
