This position is located in the Pathology Department. Shift will be determined by the Medical Laboratory Manager.
Incumbent shall assume responsibility for Point of Care Testing (POCT) performed by Nursing Services throughout the hospital. Supervise the Medical Laboratory Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician and Phlebotomy staff.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either of the following will qualify: A baccalaureate degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science plus three years of professional level experience as a medical technologist. OR A baccalaureate degree with sixteen semester hours in the biological sciences which includes three semester hours in microbiology, sixteen semester hours in chemistry which includes three semester hours in organic or biochemistry, three semester hours in mathematics; and one year of clinical training in a clinical laboratory, plus three years of professional level experience as a medical technologist. NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:Possession of a current Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist or Specialist license issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners as required by law based upon the duties of the position.

This job is restricted to laboratories which are licensed, regulated and inspected for compliance with various federal and state rules and regulations and which fall under the jurisdiction of state licensure, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Job Distinctions:
Differs from Medical Laboratory Technologist 3 by the presence of direct line supervisory duties over at least two professional level laboratory personnel.

Differs from a Medical Laboratory Manager 1 by lack of responsibility for the overall management of a laboratory.

Examples of Work

Assigns work to and supervises a staff of professionals in a medical unit.

Checks that all quality control, function verification, and preventive maintenance has been performed satisfactorily on all instruments.

Inspects to see that area is sufficiently clean, supplies properly stored, and reagents viable.

Possesses expertise in quality control, problem solving, troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or instrumentation.

Operates flow cytometer for standard analyses to make initial diagnosis of immune disease and other hematological disorders.

Oversees the complete identification, confirmation and sensitivities on mycobacteriology and mycology specimens from all state as well as private facilities.
