The Healthy Appalachia Institute Program Director will have operational oversight of the programs of the institute. This position will serve as subject matter expert in the field of public and population health, with a responsibility for community outreach, program development and management, grant writing, reporting and instructing one public health, undergraduate course per semester. In addition to administering programs, this director will support the work of employees including student interns and fellows as well as provide academic advising support for students seeking an education in public and population health. The University of Virginia's College at Wise invites applications for a Program Director, Healthy Appalachia Institute (HAI). This position will be responsible for advancing the mission of HAI to improve the health, education, environment, and prosperity for residents of central Appalachia. In doing so, the Program Director will engage communities and organizations and address the social, economic and scientific issues that exist at the interface of health and Appalachian culture. This position requires a master's degree in Public Health (MPH or MSPH), experience in developing, managing and coordinating public health or health-related programs, and experience working with diverse constituencies. The Program Director must coordinate multiple projects and collaborate with diverse stakeholders including UVA Wise faculty, staff and students as well as colleagues from the University of Virginia and regional, state and federal partners. This position covers a large geographical region. Specific responsibilities include: A Master's in Public Health (MPH) is required or must be obtained by the first day of employment with HAI. The successful candidate must be proficient with Microsoft Office and statistical packages, competent internet usage, and the ability to use on-line health databases. At least three years' experience in a health-related setting is also required. This professional must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as time management, project management, budgeting, relationship development, and technical skills. In addition, the director must have demonstrated ability to initiate and carry out complex projects and must have the ability to interact with all levels of organizations including community leaders, colleagues, stakeholders and citizens.
