About this position:

HSS has a long tradition of groundbreaking basic and translation research in orthopedics and musculoskeletal research. Given our current knowledge of disease, cutting edge technology and most importantly, patient need, we are now focused on building upon our clinical research.

HSS is uniquely positioned to accelerate clinical research for musculoskeletal diseases by leveraging:

• Big data applications that utilize our extensive patient data in the Electronic Health Record and in multiple registries.
• Machine learning and other artificial intelligence approaches to develop personalized, targeted treatment strategies.
• Philanthropic support for the development of the Research Infrastructure and Team (Biobank, Biostatisticians, Research Assistants/Coordinators)

The ideal candidate should be an individual who has an established, independent research career in clinical research and/or population health science, and a strong track record of peer-reviewed extramural grant funding, particularly from NIH.

• Knowledge of current clinical issues in musculoskeletal disorders and a vision for how to address these knowledge gaps to improve patient care and clinical outcomes.
• Experience and expertise in analysis of complex data sets, machine learning, bioinformatics, population science, or outcomes research is preferred. Other areas of interest include implementation science, design and execution of clinical trials, epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research or health disparities, or observational clinical research with a translational/mechanistic focus.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

• Rigorous understanding of research methodology, study design and biostatistics.
• A sustained track record of service as an outstanding mentor for junior investigators.
• History of successful collaborations with basic, translational, clinical, and population health investigators in multiple disciplines including orthopedic surgery, biomechanics and/or imaging.
• A broad knowledge of administrative, ethical and regulatory requirements for human subjects’ research.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Evaluate, expand and monitor current clinical research programs within orthopedics research program to report on the health and status of each program.
• Oversee development of partnerships between clinicians, surgeons and basic/translational investigators at HSS and other institutions nationally and internationally.
• Provide insight for new programmatic research themes and assist with the recruitment of new clinical research scientists. Support the development and retention of talented clinical and translational investigators.
• Work to build comprehensive strategic efforts to better support our research mission including supporting the development of large multi-investigator program project grants.
• As a contributing member of the Research Institute, develop and recruit core resources including administrative support, biostatistics, epidemiology, bioinformatics/big data development, machine learning, and biobank resources.
• Facilitate development of collaborations with the Weill Cornell Medicine Clinical and Translational Sciences Center, which includes HSS as well as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Rockefeller University, and Hunter College.
