This position has the responsibility of performing the preparation and application of monitoring systems during provocative stress procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares the application of monitoring systems used during the provocative stress procedures.

  • Operates sophisticated computerized data acquisition equipment used in obtaining electrocardiograms of patients undergoing various stress procedures.

  • Performs medical procedures involving a treadmill and bicycle exercise tolerance tests, Thallium, Muga, and oxygen consumption stress tests.

  • Observes and monitors the patient stress test by gradually increasing the speed to observe the effect of increased exertion.

  • Assists the stress test proctor in monitoring patients throughout the course of the procedure, and may perform IV access.

  • Monitors for malignant arrhythmias and changes in ECG pattern.

  • Participates in the training of other cardiac technicians in special procedures.

  • Prepares and processes paperwork from electrocardiograph readings for the physician's review.

  • Collaborates with physicians and cardiac sonnographers regarding symptoms, complications, patient history, and test results.

  • Maintains accurate logs of patient information regarding electrocardiograph readings and cardiac studies.

  • Prepares and processes billing paperwork, and assists in maintaining filing cards and patient folders.

  • Performs minor maintenance and cleaning of equipment, and restocks supplies.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Demonstrated potential ability to perform the essential functions as outlined above.

  • Demonstrated, in depth understanding of 12 lead electrocardiolography.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all cardiac arrhythmias, potential risk, and their impact on the study being performed.

  • Ability to provide care to the population served.

  • Demonstrated understanding of, and ability to anticipate, the causes of ECG artifacts encountered during stress procedures in order to reduce or eliminate these problems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of cardiac medications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development.

  • The ability to assess data regarding the patient's status.

  • Ability to provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

  • Ability to know when to involve a physician in a study.

  • Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • Two years of direct patient care experience, or educational equivalency.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • Experience as a Paramedic, AEMT, telemetry technician, or other role in the medical field and/or an emergency care setting with experience responding to emergent cardiac and pulmonary events.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
