Position Highlights The University of Arizona Arthritis Center is dedicated to patient-centered medical care based on advances in clinical and translational research. The UA Arthritis Center remains the only center of its kind in the state of Arizona dedicated to multidisciplinary research and education related to rheumatic, musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases. The UAAC is the focal point and catalyst for clinical and translational research in rheumatic, musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases.

The Associate Director for Research of the Arthritis Center will collaborate with senior leadership within, and external to, the UAAC to foster innovative and productive translational research in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. The Associate Director for Research will collaborate with the other members of the UAAC executive leadership team to ensure integration and strategic positioning of UAAC’s research programs in support of the UAAC’s overall, research, outreach and education missions. As a senior researcher, there is an expectation to maintain an extramurally funded personal program of research with publications in high impact journals commensurate with their rank, and participate in graduate and postdoctoral training.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will develop and maintain effective collaborative relationships with diverse internal and external constituents and stakeholders that contribute to success and sustainability of research in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.

Research Leadership:

  • Participate in UAAC Leadership Team.
  • Assist in the implementation of the strategic vision and plan for UAAC research mission.
  • Develop and maintain collaborations across the UA, Banner Health and other stakeholders, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally to facilitate UAAC’s research mission.
  • Participate in UAAC philanthropic development activities related to research.
  • Provide research leadership to UAAC clinical, research and outreach faculty for team-based science and other scholarly activity.
  • Assist in the recruitment of new research faculty.

Conduct Research:

  • Develop and submit funding proposals to appropriate funding agencies to support research training, research infrastructure and research projects.
  • Implement research and research training projects.
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.

Teaching and Mentoring:

  • Teaching of junior faculty, residents, fellows, graduate students and medical students.
  • Mentor junior faculty, residents, and fellows in the conduct of research activity.

Minimum Qualifications
  • MD, PhD or comparable doctoral degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience in successful leadership of research programs.
  • Five (5) year track record of obtaining NIH and at least one RO1 (or comparable) peer-reviewed funding.
  • Current extramural grant funding.
  • High productivity concerning grants, and at least 40 peer-reviewed publications.
  • At least a 5-year history of successful mentorship of junior faculty.

Preferred Qualifications -Demonstrated ability to build collaborative research relationships with a diverse group of academic, health system, and community partners. -Experience with developing and/or leading research training programs. -Significant experience obtaining and administering extramural funding from a range of sponsors. -Experience with philanthropic development for research.
